New directions for the Light & Shadow Gallery

The Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery opened in February 2018 in the boutique, beautiful village of Leura in the World Heritage Blue Mountains. The aim was to create a much deserved exhibition space for Australia’s most influential photographer, Max Dupain OBE AC. While his work is displayed elsewhere, nowhere was there the degree of variation and quality of his prints, both hand prints made by Dupain and his long-time studio manager Jill White, and fine art prints made from scans of the original negatives. The Gallery exhibited and sold Vintage prints made by Max, Limited Edition hand prints made by Jill White, high quality giclee prints as well as posters, mounts, books and cards. All of these are now offered through the Max Dupain website via the Gallery Shop page.

The other aim for the gallery was to exhibit the monochrome photographic works of established photographers that had been influenced by Dupain’s legacy. These photographers were Bob Kersey, Ian Brown, Peter Hill, Peter Damo and Len Metcalf. Each of these photographer’s work were displayed for around two months to allow appropriate exposure and opportunity to sell. All of their work was well received by visitors and their work enhanced the aesthetic of the gallery. It is therefore with great regret that I had to close the gallery after a year, much to my disappointment and others. As any business owner understands, love and appreciation for the gallery and its artwork is wonderful but does not always convert into sufficient sales. Photographic galleries are doing it tough around the world but especially in Australia where the market has plummeted over the past 5-10 years. So it is time to move on and up into the cyber world of global reach.

The Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery is now a virtual gallery exhibiting and selling the iconic photography of Max Dupain AC OBE (1911-1992), and the wonderful, complementary work of Jill White, Ian Brown, Peter Hill, Peter Damo and Len Metcalf. Other photographers will be invited to join the LSG exhibition but it is Dupain that leads the promotion of the photographic collection held by the Gallery. I encourage you to view all the artists galleries and let others know about the offerings of the Light and Shadow Gallery.
